Tampere University has a strong record of achievements in the fields of Automation Technology and Mechanical Engineering. The research and education activities of these fields are organised by the Automation Technology and Mechanical Engineering (ATME) unit. These fields can be categorized by their application areas comprising Robotics, Process control, Intelligent Working Machines, Factory Automation Systems, and Aircraft Systems and Aviation. There are a plethora of core technologies and research domains that are crucial in these application areas. In particular, the technologies and methods of Design, Control Theory, Advanced manufacturing, Reliability and Condition Monitoring serve the mentioned application areas. 

Job description: 

The ATME unit of Tampere University invites applications a for tenure-track position in the field of Automation Technology.  The focus of the position is on improving the dependability and security of industrial automation systems, specifically in the following topics: 

Industrial automation and automation systems engineering – complex networked dynamic systemsDependable critical infrastructure – high reliability, resilience towards disturbances (e.g., cyber attacks)Information systems in automation – massive data collection, real-time databases, time-series databases, automation integration protocolsSecure lifecycle of automation data – acquisition, curing, storing, processing, visualizingSystems engineering – security systems designSystems thinking – complex networked dynamic systems

 The application domains, among others, where the solutions will be applied are 

autonomous mobile working machines and fleets of such machinesautomation in continuous processes and in resilient production systemssmart energy grids

We prefer applicants who can strengthen or expand our research in the area of Dependable Systems and Unit’s current research fields. The growing importance of automation technology in digitalisation and green transition are the main drivers for the opening of the position. 

If successful, you will be placed at the level of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, based on your experience and expertise. While in the early stages of your career the focus is on research, in time you will be expected to contribute increasingly to teaching, curriculum development and student supervision.    

You will be expected to pursue and supervise world class scientific research in your topic area. Active collaboration with local, national, and global research partners, as well as industry is encouraged. You will be expected to secure substantial national and international external funding for your research group as well as nurture interactions with relevant stakeholders for societal impact. Also the successful candidates are expected to actively participate in teaching, collaborate between units and faculties and to commit to the strategy of the faculty and Tampere University. The specific objectives will be set based on the level and previous experience of the candidate.  

Requirements: 

You should have a doctoral degree in automation technology, control theory, software engineering, or a related field. Competencies in cyber safety, critical infrastructure, control systems, control theory, measurement research, automation networks, dependable systems, security engineering are appreciated. You should also have experience in scientific or technological research in academia. Further requirements for each tenure track level are as follows: 

Assistant Professor  we require:  

ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellenceteaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position

Associate Professor  we require:  

track record of independent scholarly activity on a high international levelteaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the positionability to lead a research group and acquire external fundingtrack record of international scholarly activity.

Professor   we require:  

high-level scholarly expertiseexperience of leading scientific researchability to provide high-quality research-based education and instructiontrack record of winning external research fundingtrack record of international scholarly activity

Initial appointment as Assistant Professor / Associate Professor is for five years, subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured faculty member after the first five-year period. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.    

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4200-4400 EUR/month and for an Associate Professor approximately 4800-5000 EUR/month and for a Professor approximately 5800-6100 EUR/month, all before taxes. Higher salaries may be negotiated for candidates with exceptional experience and/or performance. Support from the Faculty for building the candidate’s own group will be negotiated.
